These following pictures show the amount of thought and engineering that goes into the whole launch process. After looking at the pictures you will know why there’s a good period of time between shuttle launches

It really amuses me to see what kind of preparations go into getting the shuttle ready for Launch. Kudos to you for putting up this snapshots together.
I just like the idea of the NASA Crawler is pretty kick ass. I giant mobile platform that the shuttle is built, transported and launched from. Considering that the Crawler costs billions in itself, and that there are 4 of them. Pretty cool.
Just makes me think what a poor design the shuttle is its hardly the reusable spacecraft we are told it is.
Guess thats why its retiring soon and we have no replacement !
I am only 25 years old, so I don’t know about any of the promotions that were made to get the shuttle project funded, but give the time that has passed and what NASA has learned, a new shuttle design program would allow them to stream line the entire project and be more flexible in future missions.

Did you know that the booster is now transported inside an enclosed area because rednecks used to shoot holes in it during river transport? Martin-Marietta kept finding holes on inspection, and couldn’t figure out what was happening until they posted watchouts and finally saw bunches of local hicks with rifles having fun shooting.
(from an friend who was an Engineer on the early booster program)
This fails to show that the Main Engines are removed, transported to Stennis Space Center, inspected ,overhauled as needed, test fired and returned to KSC to be reinstalled on a shuttle for future flight.
Hey!, I don\’t know a lot about the subject matter in this particular post (y Seen Shuttle Pre-Flight Activities), but I did enjoy reading this and learned a little bit. Before clicking here I was trying to find out about Activities in particular, and I will come back now that I have found you.
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article y Seen Shuttle Pre-Flight Activities, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
If a search on Activities comes up with a link to y Seen Shuttle Pre-Flight Activities Monday, then what might the same search bring up the following day??
Man has to be the stupidest of animals, all that energy and time spent just to see what’s outside of earth. What man kind needs is to invest energy in expanding fertile age of women so that they can have up to 15 children, acording to Darwin success isn’t seeing space it’s having planty of kids to carry your genome
Hundreds of thousands of products we use derived from scientists creating things for our astronauts.
There are still idiots that believe we never been to space!!! LOL Buy a telescope stupid!! I have seen the shuttle and space station orbiting overhead myself through my telescope.
“wow”. You mean the shuttle doesn’t just suddenly materialize on the launch pad? This doesn’t show mission design & planning, engineering, physics, etc. behind the program. MOST of the work is done in a room of whiteboards and notepads, not all this “sexy” reassembling of the shuttle.
I keep thinking of apollo8 and shot of the earth rising over the moon and the words “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”
God created mankind in his image so we too create and we will go forth there is no looking back there is no more senator proxmires, and no osama bin laden will get in our way we will expore ,settle and grow tall where the stars whisper to each other where no ear can hear. God is with us as we look after his creation and see the Glory of his handiwork in the heavens and in each other. Remember your attitude determins your altitude and as Jesus said “with God all things are possible” so have faith in God and each other and expect micirles as we in prayer walk humbly with God and in accordance with His will of mercy ask what you will and as Jesus said greater miricles than these you will see…” this is just the beginning of space exploration we aint seen nothing yet! as Louie Armstrong sang in his last song “what a wonderfull world”

Incredible when you really think what actually goes into getting a shuttle just to the launch pad..

awesome collection
definitely a lot of work to be done each time!
That’s insane to see how much actually goes on before the launch….
Eye-opening stuff!!!

Why, instead of coming up with an advancement by shuttling to orbit and shuttling to moon are we returning to Apollo style technology?
It’s a bloody disgrace.
It’s amazing this thing even gets off the ground! Sure wish I could see it in person sometime!

neat and interesting pics; THANKS for sharing

I like that someone rides on top of the main engine while it’s being replaced. Yee-haw!

Ha - i don’t think we’re having any trouble keeping the human race from dying out.
Sarcasm noted.
Great photos, must be amazing to actually work there.
Great step by step show.
It just kills me to see so many people think that going to space is a waste of time and money… Goto some sites and read…

I was sitting on Hollywood Beach FL. when I saw that fuel tank go by.
